I’m an SKA Research Fellow based at SAAO in Cape Town and at AIMS. I completed my PhD in Cosmology at the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2003. After a few months at UNESCO and at AIMS, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Italy. I spent the last five years developing Universe Awareness (UNAWE), an outreach initiative now running in ~40 countries. I am now back in cosmology research, working with other members of the AIMS Cosmology group at a very exciting time for South African and African science. Bridging research with development has always been a great motivation, especially how new technologies enable the innovative use of science for development. I was the co-organiser of the second dotAstronomy workshop in 2009.
What inspired you to study science, and astrophysics?
I wanted to think but philosophy was frustrating for lack of clarity , so what better than to study physics?
Do you have a role model in science?
Teachers who make science approachable and likable because science is at its best when it is a fun game of discovery, advocates of openness, true critical thinkers who make one change perspective
