The metaphor of research

We have produced a couple of videos, each of which ends with the little video snippet shown below.

The storyline mimics the process of research. The apple at the beginning of the film is the universe, with its physics represented by fundamental constants written on the apple.

When we do cosmology, we chop up the Universe into smaller parts, that we can tackle one by one. Then we try to recombine them and hope we put them back together into a big picture where everything fits together snugly and consistently. In reality, however, the final picture is somewhat simplistic, and never the full original apple, so there is always more research to do to get a better picture.
