Art-science experiment

The issue of what art-science is – or should be – has been a topic of lots of debate at AIMS over the past few months following the Sutherland workshop on the topic, covered by Hillary in a recent blog post. It is easy to get lost in the abstract issues so I recently tried to do something a little more concrete. Using various free audio tools I made the following image, which is now printed on canvas and hanging on our walls.

Audio spectrogram for the word cosmology

It certainly isn’t profound but I had fun doing it and have written about it mainly as encouragement to others to play around with the ideas of art and science.

The image shows both the spectrogram (purple) and volume (gold) as functions of time for the word “cosmology” spoken by yours truly. There must be much more creative examples out there, so if you know of any, let me know!
